Founded in 1959, Nassau Community College was created as a part of State University of New York (SUNY). The college started out small and opened in a wing of the Mineola County Courthouse. Within two years, the student population increased so dramatically that the college was moved to Mitchel Field, a former Air Force base. By 1978, with the continued rise of enrollment, the college added a modern library, a physical education complex, administrative offices and two more academic wings. As they continued to grow they added a College Center and a Social Sciences and Visual Arts Building in 1997. Today almost 50 years later, they continue to utilize every inch of their campus with thousands of full time and part time students every year.
Nassau Community College is currently the largest community college under the SUNY system. They have a nationwide reputation for not only having excellent academic stature but also for how easily these academic classes transfer to other four year colleges and universities. They also provide smaller classes that are offered at varying times during the day and week. Some classes and programs are offered during the day, some in the evening and there are even some that are offered in what they term as the Weekend College. This allows students from all walks of life to take classes whenever it works for their schedule.
The Community College is located on over 200 acres in East Garden City New York. The campus is has a more modern feel with its building having very clean lines and simple look. They have a national reputation as being THE elite public two year college in the United States. In fact, with their strong programs, they are noted to award the largest number of two year Associate degrees in New York and the third largest nationwide. With such wide recognition, it makes it much easier for students to transfer into a four year university much easier.
