Established as a career oriented school, New York Institute of Technology opened its doors in 1955 in Brooklyn, New York. The premise behind the institution was to give students the necessary training to succeed in their careers. This was done by creating a balance of technology, liberal arts and career study. They offered higher education to all who applied from the high school graduate to the adult looking to go further in their already established career path.
Quickly, as their program became recognized, the Institute outgrew its small facilities in Brooklyn. In 1958 after a mere three years, the campus relocated to Manhattan. Here in the former Knights of Pythias building in downtown Manhattan the college flourished. Centrally located in Manhattan students now had access not only to a full range of programs, but also easy access to Lincoln Center and Central Park. Students today have easy access to all that the big city of New York has to offer from Broadway to wonderful museums, libraries and outstanding cuisine.
In 1963, New York Institute of Technology opened up what is considered its main campus on the former estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney in Old Westbury, New York. Located on 100 serene acres of land, the campus feels more like a private estate then a college campus. Much of the old estate buildings on the property were reconstructed and renovated to be used for classrooms and educational purposes. When they were renovated careful attention was given to make sure that the exterior of the building retained its old estate charm. Most of the buildings and parking lots are connected by way of quiet walkways that either takes you through the peaceful woods or across the meadows.
Then in 1984, NYIT acquired land in Central Islip. It was here that the Institute added dorms for its students to live and attend the main campus. It was this site that became the residential campus and a pool and bowling alley was added to give residents something to do. Today, the Central Islip Campus offers a highly renowned Culinary Arts program, hospitality management and Vocational Independence program.
Today, the New York Institute of Technology continues to provide excellent educational programs for students. They are able to offer smaller class sizes (most classes only allow 30 students only) as well as over 100 different undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. You can choose a degree in one of the many programs including Arts and Sciences, the field of Education, Health Professions including Nursing and Osteopathic Medicine, as well as numerous continuing education programs and certificate programs. If you are looking for an educational program that offers the perks of a big school but has the small school feel then the New York Institute of Technology is a school that you should consider.
If you are looking for a school that has lots to offer beside the educational side, then New York Institute of Technology is definitely a place that you will want to explore.
