Founded in 1970 by Dr. Bernard Lander, Touro College is an independent school of higher learning that is under Jewish sponsorship. Dr. Bernard Lander established the school as a way to “strengthen Jewish life and perpetuate the Judaic tradition on the college campus” as well as to contribute to building a better society. Using this as a mission statement for the college, the doors opened in 1971 with only 35 men.
Throughout the next decade Touro College continued to expand their programs allowing women to enroll in 1974. They added many programs in the fields of Health Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Touro Law School. By the 1990’s the college was well on its ways to establishing excellent educational programs in all fields of study. They also turned their sites to international studies as well opening the first American sponsored business college in Russia and a school of business in Jerusalem.
In the last decade, the college continued to focus on expanding programs across the United States in California, Nevada and Florida. Their programs include The Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, Graduate School of Technology, Touro University College of Medicine, Graduate School of Social Work and many others, meeting the needs of students across the Globe.
Touro College over the years has expanded with over 30 different campuses worldwide. You will find a large portion of them in the New York area. The Main Center is located in Manhattan, New York. There are also 8 other campuses in the Manhattan area. These campuses include the NY School of Career and Applied Studies at Taino Towers, the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Graduate School of Business and the Graduate School of Technology. The LAS women’s dormitory is also located in Manhattan.
Brooklyn New York also has many campuses associated with Touro College. There are 14 different campuses in the Brooklyn area including six different campuses for the New York School of Career and Applied Studies. There is also the Lander College for Men, the Graduate Program in Speech Pathology, the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, the School of Lifelong Education and a continuing education program at Machon L’Parnassa.
Queens New York houses four of the campuses affiliated with Touro College. These include another campus for the Lander College for Men and another New York School of Career and Applied Studies campus. Located in Queens is also Yeshivas Ohr Hachaim and Dov Revel/Yeshiva of Forest Hills, two Rabbinical Seminary Schools
Touro College also has two campuses located in Central Islip on Long Island. The
Touro Law Center is dedicated to educating students who want a career in the field of law. The other campus on Long Island is the Touro College School of Health Sciences.
