The United States Merchant Marine Academy was founded in 1943 as an answer for the need to train U.S. citizens for the service in the Merchant Marines, the academy has a long history. During World War II enrollment of the academy rose to over 2500 and length of course instruction was decreased to only 24 months in order to train troops quickly. After the war ended, so the curriculum changed. The four year college level program was reintroduced in 1945.
Over the past 60 plus years, the Academy has been recognized again and again in times of military conflict. They had training programs for officers who were involved in the Korean, Vietnam conflicts as well as the Persian Gulf War and in the Middle East Conflict.
Located on the picturesque waterfront of Long Island’s north shores, the United States Merchant Marine Academy is a beautiful campus. Nestled on the 82 acres of the campus are 28 buildings that offer housing, a library, dining facilities, academic classrooms and extensive waterfront facilities. The Academy has over 100 vessels for its students to use. The school offers tours throughout the entire campus for the public to see the campus. There is also a museum and gift shop for visitors to enjoy
The Academy today offers an excellent opportunity for education. Both men and women from all different types of ethnic backgrounds have the opportunity to apply and attend the academy if they can meet the rigorous standards set by the facility. Not only are applicants required to meet certain academic and age requirements, but they also must be able to pass a Physical Aptitude Examination as well as obtain a Congressional nomination in order to be accepted into the Academy.
At the Marine Academy they offer a one of a kind training program for all of their midshipman. Each student is required to choose a field of study in the departments of Marine Engineering, Humanities, Marine Transportation, mathematics and Sciences, Naval Sciences or Physical Education and Athletics. Classes are small with a 20:1 ratio which makes individual needs easily met by the college.
When students are not working hard at academics, the campus offers many activities for them to partake in. They have a regimental marching band, sailing squadron, Glee Club and Chorus, or students can even join one of the many sports and social events on campus. With such a large range of activities on campus, students are sure to find something to keep them busy. If students need a break from campus life, New York City is only 20 minutes away with its Broadway shows, museums and other activities. Or, they can visit New York serene beaches. With so much to do in and around campus, there is bound to be something that peaks the interest of everyone on campus.
The Marine Academy focuses on teaching its students the valuable skills in maritime industry and the armed forces. It is one of the only schools of its kind that offers this type of training. Upon graduation all midshipman receive a bachelors of science degree, a license as a merchant marine officer, and enough military knowledge to be commissioned in a the Armed Forces Reserves.
