The Webb Institute of Naval Architecture was founded in 1889 by William Henry Webb. He was one of the finest shipbuilders of the 19th century. He felt the need to establish an educational institution to specialize in the art of naval architecture and marine engineering. This dream came to fruition in 1890 with the construction of the institution on 14 acres of land overlooking the Harlem and Hudson Rivers in Bronx, New York. It was three years until the building was completed and it coincided with the first graduating class in 1893.
In 1945, 50 years after opening, Webb Institute outgrew the campus in the Bronx. After extensive searching, they found a site in Glen Cove, Long Island. They purchased the former country estate of Herbert L. Pratt, a leading figure in the oil industry. After some renovations, classes began in 1947 at the new site.
Today, Webb Institute continues the endeavor to offer a one of a kind educational experience. Their program in Naval Architecture with a minor in Marine Engineering is unique. In fact, it is so unique that the institute offers a full tuition scholarship program. This is the only one of its kind in the U.S. This means that students are only responsible for paying for room and board, books and any other personal expenses for their stay at Webb Institute.
With fewer than 100 students on campus and 10 full time faculty, students get the rare occurrence of small classes and instructors that teach everything from academics and laboratory studies. Students at Webb Institute have access to their instructors whenever they need them.
While living on the 26 acre campus, students have lots to keep them occupied when not worrying about academics. On campus they have access to a private beach, athletic activities, and clubs and of course access to boats for recreational fun. But activities are not limited to just campus activities. In the town of Glen Cove students will find plenty of things to see and do. There is the Welwyn Nature Preserve with over 200 acres to explore, the beautiful Gold Coast mansions to investigate as well as the nightlife in the downtown area. The other nice thing is that the school has an arrangement with the local YMCA which allows the students to use the facility at no extra cost. And if music is your niche, then the North Shore Symphony Orchestra will be happy to have you participate.
If you are looking for the type of program that pushes your talents to the edge, then Webb Institute is a place that you will want to check out. Keep in mind that the institute only accepts 20 to 25 students every year. These students are handpicked from high school graduates who are interested in pursuing a degree in engineering. The qualifications are rigorous and they look specifically quality, motivation, SAT scores and have a strong mathematical background. Once you are accepted, you will reap the benefits of attending such a unique educational institution. These benefits will continue even upon graduating as Webb Institute has a perfect record of all graduates either finding a job immediately or heading off to graduate school.
