Founded in 1893, Adelphi University was originally a preparatory school located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. In 1896, Adelphi Academy was officially established as Adelphi College and was coeducational. In 1912 it became an all women's college starting a Dance Program as well as the very first School of Nursing in the US. It remained a women's only college until the early 1950s at which time it changed back to a coeducational college. In 1929 Adelphi College Campus moved from Brooklyn to its present location in Garden City, New York. It was at this present location that Adelphi University was defined and developed into the oldest Liberal Arts and Science institution on Long Island. They can proudly boast starting the first clinical psychology program of its kind in the US (established in 1952). Then in 1963, the college was granted University status and since then has been adding programs to enhance its already top notch programs. From the School of Business to establishing a program for the education of adults, Adelphi has had an extensive 115 year history of excellent education.
So what does Adelphi University have in store for you? Adelphi University has four different campuses in which you can find your choice of majors. The oldest and largest of the four campuses is the main campus in Garden City. There is also Hauppauge Education and Conference Center, the Hudson Valley Center and the Manhattan Center. Each campus offers a unique educational experience.
Garden City Campus:After being moved to this location in 1929, over the years it has continued to expand across its 75 acre plot of land. About 45 minutes from downtown New York City, this Adelphi University Campus is located in the beautifully distinctive suburban community of Garden City, New York. Here not only are students immersed with excellent education, but also with history and beautiful stately homes with distinctive architecture. This campus also enjoys its association with the American Association of Botanical Gardens and in 2002 became an arboretum. With over 60 different species of trees and shrubs, the campus grounds and gardens are a sight to behold. The campus over the years has transformed its appearance and updated its programs with state of the art facilities including a recreation and sports complex, a Fine Arts Building and a Performing Arts Center.
Manhattan Center: Located in downtown Manhattan, this part of Adelphi University is geared towards providing evening and weekend courses for those students who are looking to either change careers or want to further advance in the career that they are currently working in. Having opened in the 1970s as an experiment to see if adults would pursue an education or further their education, this campus has flourished. The Manhattan Center prides itself on having open access to classes, programs and all college services during times when normal colleges are closed. Adelphi University understands that many people have to work for a living, but still want to further their education. The Manhattan Center has fulfilled this need.
Hudson Valley Center: While the School of Social Work at Adelphi University was established in 1949, the Hudson Valley Center was not opened until 1973. Located in Poughkeepsie New York, the Hudson Valley Center offers an extremely personalized education in the field of Social Work. The program offers excellent faculty which focus on the individual student. Once again, they offer most of the classes during the evening and weekends to accommodate those who are working (as this is a Masters Program, many of the students have to continue working in the field). Graduates from the Master of Social Work program are sought out as the University prides itself on excellence and providing graduates with the highest quality eduction in the field of Social Work.
Hauppauge Education and Conference Center: Opened in 2002, this campus continues to offer high quality adult education. Located in Hauppauge, New York this campus only strengthens the Universities commitment to education. This extension of the University again offers excellent, high quality education at times that allow working professionals to continue to work and take classes outside of work. The Hauppauge Center offers many different courses that let many returning adult students pursue higher education when their schedule allows it. And because it is located in the second largest industrial Park in the US, they are in the right place for many working people to have access to continuing education.
Since its inception Adelphi University has undergone many changes which define its character as the oldest Liberal Arts and Science institution on Long Island. Now Adelphi University is ranked as one of the top universities to offer quality education at very affordable prices. With the rising cost of college tuition many students and families search high and low to find the best value for their education. While this might seem like a difficult task to do, there are colleges and Universities out there that offer excellent education at much lower rates. Adelphi University tops this list.

Note: Graduation rates measure the percentage of entering students who complete their program in a certain time. We report an overall graduation rate that counts students as graduates if this is their first time in college, they study full time, and they complete their program within 150% of its normal time. For a four-year degree program, entering students who complete within six years are counted as graduates.
Transfer-out rates measure the percentage of entering students who transfer to another institution within 150% of normal time to program completion.
