Long Island is home to many colleges and universities with prestigious names such as Hofstra University, Dowling College, Saint Joseph's College, SUNY Stony Brook and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Hofstra University is a wonderful, private University offering more than 130 undergraduate and 140 graduate programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Communication, Education and Allied Human Services and Honors studies, as well as a School of Law. They have a student/faculty ratio of 14 to 1 with a priority on teaching excellence. The small class size will allow students and faculty to emphasize interaction, critical thinking and development of judgment. Dowling College's approach to education is putting the student first. Classes are small which provide the professors the chance to know each student well and to apply teaching skills on a more personal basis. The have two modern campuses that offer the latest technology and information resources to enhance the learning process in every course, from the arts and sciences to education, business and aviation. St Joseph's College agrees that preparing their students for a life characterized by integrity, intellectual and spiritual values, social responsibility, and service - is a person that will be worthy of their motto " Esse non videri : "To be, not to seem." When you hear the name Stony Brook you think of excellence in new and exciting discoveries in science, medicine, and technology, infusing the region's economy with new vigor and strength, or providing primary medical services to more than half a million Long Islanders. Stony Brook University has produced several of our leaders in many different fields that have helped to not only mold Long Island but all of America. What can be said for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy that is not already known?
